US intensifies coup pressure on Honduran government

US president declares public support for regime opposition candidate

US President Donald Trump has stepped up his direct intervention in the Honduran elections scheduled for November 30, declaring his explicit support for conservative candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura of the National Party. In a post on the social network Truth Social, Trump described Asfura as “the only true friend of freedom in Honduras”, extolling his achievements as mayor of Tegucigalpa. Trump promised a partnership to fight the “narco-communists” and secure humanitarian aid for the country.

The US president warned that if Rixi Moncada, of the Libre Party, wins, the alleged “narco-terrorists” linked to Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro would dominate Honduras, just as they have allegedly done in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. He also criticized the third candidate, Salvador Nasralla (Liberal Party), accusing him of “dividing the conservative vote” and of being “almost communist” due to his previous relationship with President Xiomara Castro.

The Honduran electoral situation is marked by serious allegations of coup plots. Leaks have exposed negotiations between right-wing parties, businessmen and electoral authorities to boycott the candidacy of Moncada, the favorite in the polls, and manipulate the preliminary results system to favor Nasralla. In Honduras, there is no second round, so the candidate with the most votes takes office on January 27, 2026.

The Trump administration’s recent moves represent an intensification of the imperialist offensive against Latin America. This offensive can be seen in all the countries of the region, which are already under fierce dictatorships or the threat of a coup d’état.
