The Nicaraguan foreign minister, Denis Moncada, gave an interview to Benjamin Norton from The Grayzone, (read in Spanish) of which we will make here an overview highlighting the main ideas, including the decision Nicaragua’s historic, announced November 19, of withdrawing from the OAS (Organization of American States), which had already been renamed by Fidel Castro with his more accurate definition of ‘Ministry of Yankee Colonies’.
Denis Monca affirms that this decision concerns the dignity of the Nicaraguan people, the dignity of the reconstruction government and the Ortega government. He explains that they are open to bilateral and multilateral relations, but that they will not accept interference or interventionism.
“The OAS was designed, created precisely by the United States as a way to impose its political decisions, which is defined by the policy of the Monroe Doctrine.”
As far as the OAS is concerned, this should be an independent body that could mediate the security and interests of the countries of the Americas and the Caribbean, treating everyone as a single bloc. However, the mere fact that its headquarters are in Washington, the capital of the United States, a few blocks from the White House and the State Department, shows us the reality of the situation.
Although its statute says against interfering in the internal affairs of member countries, in practice, in real life, what we see is the opposite. The OAS, for example, actively participated to remove Evo Morales from power. It published a false report claiming that there had been fraud in the Bolivian elections, and it helped to unleash a brutal coup in which scenes of true barbarity and an attack on human rights were witnessed. We can also cite the case of Juan Guaidó, who never won a single vote to be president, and even ‘represents’ Venezuela to the OAS.
“The United States orders the OAS to act. And the OAS, we’ve already seen exactly how it acted to destabilize Bolivia and bring about the overthrow of President Evo Morales, in such an unfair, arbitrary, barbaric, savage way.”
As this Diary has been reporting, imperialism is undergoing an intense decomposition. His defeat in Afghanistan is a turning point in international politics. Currently, 25% of the world’s population lives in countries sanctioned by the US and EU. With the US flagrant weakness in ‘maintaining order’, historically oppressed countries are banding together and trying to organize themselves together to face imperialist aggression.
Nicaragua is part of a group named at the UN called Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter, also made up of Venezuela, Cuba, China, Russia, Palestine, Iran, Eritrea, among several countries. This group advocates reforms at the UN and the observance of the principles contained in its charter that, according to it, allow for peaceful coexistence, respect between States, achieving and strengthening peace, etc. The country also participates in CELAC, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which has been shaping up as an alternative to the OAS, and which recently met in Mexico City. Canada and USA do not participate in CELAC.
Scams and interferences serve to stop the growth of countries, that wealth is distributed internally, and thus the resources are diverted to the imperialist countries, leaving the populations in misery. The central point of tension between the US and Nicaragua, as Denis Moncada explains, is the interoceanic canal in Nicaragua, which should be built in partnership with China and will rival the Panama Canal. Panama and the Canal, as we know, are under American control. The Nicaraguan channel will rival the Panamanian channel and will have the advantage of shortening distances and saving fuel, which will make maritime trade more efficient. However, the US does not want to allow such a resource not to be in its grasp. If here in Brazil there was foreign funding for movements like the No Vai Ter Cup, in Nicaragua there was also funding for anti-interoceanic channel demonstrations. We’ve already seen this movie, it’s one of the modus operandi of imperialism.
